However, there’s always room for more improvements. With that in mind, take a look at these Seasonal and Year-Round Conservation Tips to help you save money and help the environment.
Fall/Winter Tips:
- Open your window shades to let some solar power in to heat your home free of charge
- Keep your radiators clean and dust-free to improve air quality and heating efficiency
- Clean or replace your furnace filters at least once a month
- Seal off any gaps around your doors and windows to keep warm air in and cold air out
- Clean and check your ductwork, repairing any leaks you find
- Lower your thermostat when you plan to leave your home for a while
- Run ceiling fans backward to push warm air down from the ceiling
Spring/Summer Tips:
- Keep the shades drawn when you leave your home and when the sun would be shining directly inside
- Have your air conditioner serviced at least once a year
- On cooler nights, open your windows and turn off your air conditioner all together
- Regularly dust and vacuum cooling vents to improve air quality and cooling efficiency
- Make sure that your air conditioning pipes have been properly sealed and caulked
- Clean or replace air conditioning filters once a month
- Do not place lamps, TV sets or other heat-emitting appliances near air conditioning thermostats
- Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents or LEDs, which produce less heat
Year-Round Tips:
- Insulate! Insulate! Insulate!
- Install a programmable thermostat to save up to 10% a year on heating and cooling costs
- Keep all lights turned off when you aren’t in the room
- Install sensors, dimmers, or timers to further regulate lighting use
- Unplug appliances when not in use
- Use your dishwasher sparingly or only run full loads
- Vacuum the dust off your refrigerator coils every three months
- Take short showers instead of baths and use low-flow shower heads
- Look for the ENERGY STAR® label on all new appliances you buy
